Extracts from the BULAWAYO WEEKLY REPORT : WEEK ENDING FRIDAY 22nd February 2008 :
PENSIONERS AID
Two families were assessed where it is evident that their children can hardly support themselves let alone their parents. One woman was earning less than three pounds a month (but her employer benevolently supplements her income with the odd chicken). She does not want to change jobs and, if she did, she is unlikely to find another job. In contrast another woman has been adopted by her late second husband’s nephew who is building a flat especially for her in South Africa.
Last Saturday there were two calls for emergency help for pensioners going to hospital. The one woman was not on the database; fortunately a relative in Zambia was found to help. There other was a 96 year old who has no family. (Name deleted) gave a letter of guarantee for her. Happily her problem was solved and she was back by the afternoon. But that fact remains that hospitalisation is beyond the means of most Zimbabweans, including those who have medical insurance. Even at management level, most do not earn enough to cover one night in a private hospital.
As the infrastructure collapses some are still using their initiative. Young men can be seen filling our craterlike potholes with soil, and appealing to motorists to tip them. They are keeping our national motto: Make a Plan.
REPATRIATION
Mrs (Name deleted) asking for help to go and live in UK – she is 53 and has children in Uk. We advised her to contact her daughter and get information
FOOD FOR HOMES
Although the list of wanted things grows every day I am pleased to report that most of our homes for the last three months have seen a marked improvement on the food they are receiving and the matrons are telephoning me when they have something they need. With love from The Bulawayo Team
