Extracts from Harare weekly report

HARARE REPORT 12 - 16 May

Another grim week with violence continuing in the rural areas and coming close to home with two couples personally known to us arrested and assaulted by the price control task force. Can we last another six weeks we wonder?

Homes:

All the homes have found that the amounts they asked for in May by way of fees have not covered the expenses of running the institutions – the only ones that have survived at all are those who have linked their fees to real money and still, they are battling as things are going up in price in real terms. If it was not for the food donations, the homes would simply not be coping at all.

Individuals:

We have had a flood of new appeals for help this week and **** has been doing a great job trying to get round to see the majority of new cases while the rest of us cope with the ongoing ones.

FOOD:

Bulawayo received a food import last week and it is being distributed to the homes and [organisation name deleted]. This should keep everyone in that part of Zim going for a while.

The Harare homes still have enough imported food to last until the next import comes through either next week or in the first week of June.

We are getting very concerned about individuals in their own homes in Harare and the outlying towns as they cannot find food to buy with the money they have. [organisation name deleted] Harare is running out of food and at a meeting today told us that they had had to cut down substantially on the size of the food packs. They are finding less and less food to buy in Zim and rely heavily on the imports and when there are delays, as at present, they are basically running out. We have organized to have a meeting next week with all the different charities involved in food for the elderly as well as an import agent to try and find ways of increasing the amount of imported food available for [organisation name deleted] as well as looking at importing pallets for those individuals who have access to outside money.

Until next week
